The Language Flagship Roadmap Initiative

The Language Flagship, a federal initiative of the National Security Education Program, is sponsoring a series of state-level Language Roadmap initiatives aimed at assessing the economic, social, and cultural demand for language skills.  This multi-month process results in state-and local-level “roadmaps” for policies and educational strategies to shape a competitive work force.  These projects define the context and demand for language skills affecting economic competitiveness and the capacity to deliver goods and services in each state. Three Flagship institutions produced language Roadmaps in 2007:  University of Oregon, the Ohio State University, and the University of Texas at Austin.  The State of Utah, in collaboration with The Language Flagship and its Chinese Flagship Center, produced a Roadmap in 2008.  The University of Rhode Island, through the Chinese Flagship Program, is coordinating the 2011-12 Language Roadmap initiative.
